Electronic Musical Instruments

An electronic musical instrument is an instrument which creates its sound by outputting an electrical audio signal which eventually drives a loudspeaker. These instruments enables the user to easily adjust the frequency, pitch and the duration of notes. Simple electronic musical instruments are occasionally referred to as Sound Effects. The instruments have gained much use in many music styles and music production. Researchers are coming up with new electronic musical instruments and controllers. All of the electronic musical instruments can be considered to be a compartment of audio signal processing appliances.

The first electronic musical instrument was the Denis d’or in 1753. This instrument consisted of keyboard of over seven hundred strings electrified to improve sonic qualities. This instrument was made by the Václav Prokop Diviš, a Czech theologian. The second electronic musical instrument called Clavecin electrique was mace in 1761. This one, was a keyboard instruments with picks activated electrically. The Musical telegraph invented by Elisha Gray in 1876, was the first electric synthesizer. It used steel reeds vacillated by electromagnets and broadcasted over a telephone wire.

Digital Music Instruments are premeditated to produce the sound of existing musical instruments in a simple way. The most common ones are: piano keyboards, octopads, rhythm machines and synthesizers. Before anyone uses an electronic musical instrument, He or she should follow several rules which includes: making sure that they are correctly plugged into electricity sockets, avoiding spilling water or fluids on them and making sure they are in good working order before using them. You should never use a worn out instrument since it can cause electrocution to the user.

A synthesizer is a musical instrument with additional sounds, music effects and functions compared to a conventional keyboard. It usually produces electric waves and amends them using different electronic components. A synthesizer can be just a detached effects sampler or an effects instrument with a keyboard or integrated electric guitar. However it does not work the same as the traditional piano. The sound in this electronic musical instrument are made from component referred to as electric oscillators. Sound is generated in four stages: attack, decay, sustain and release. The attack stage begins when a key is hit and the sound created lasts until it attains the peak. When the sound starts to decrease it is said to be in decay stay  until it reaches fixed level. At the fixed level the sound is said to be in sustain level. Finally when the sound fades, sustain phased is achieved. A synthesizer is used to reverb, pitch and sustain  sound.

The original octopad was a insurrectionary percussion instrument that was adapted by many music lovers around the world. The latest versions combine cutting edge drum and percussion sounds with USB MIDI and phrase loop functions among other latest technological trends. The phrase loop function enhances creativity, overdubbing up to 3 layers and recording your playing in real time. Most of the octopads can be used alone or combined to percussion arrangement.

Drum machines or rhythm machines are deliberated to imitate drum sounds or other percussion instruments.  This type of electronic musical instrument can be used in almost all musical types not just electronic musical type. They are also essential in the absence of session drummers. Most of the machines are sequencers with a synthesizer or a playback function specializing in the production of drum sound. Musicians can also arrange unique drum beats.
Piano keyboards are also some of electronic musical instruments. They are among the most used musical instruments worldwide especially in classical and jazz genres of music. When a key on these instruments are hit, it causes a felt covered hammer to hit steel strings. The hammers rebound making the strings vibrate continuously. On releasing the key, a damper stops the vibration of the string.

Computer music is an important development for the purpose of composing music. Computers are classified as very simple and user friendly machines whose software can be used to produce electronic music. With the easier access to internet, someone can download sound generation and manipulation software that can be used to compose music without a hustle. This makes the conclusion that computers can be classified as a type of electronic musical instrument.
